Essay on “Logistics and operations management”

Essay on â€Å"Logistics and operations management† Arguably, logistics in the recent year has tremendously changed, with the adoption and growth of transport management systems, GPS, Warehouse management systems, GIS, as well as supply chain management. As a matter of fact, operations are the pillar of any organization, whether non-profit industries, marketing or manufacturing services. Logistics and operation management is a field that entails multidisciplinary activities, which comprises disciplines like logistics, product development, human resource management, quality management, as well as information systems. In most cases, operations in an organization go beyond design engineering, to developing quality feedback chain that is useful in delivery performance, and prediction of production. In the 21st century, where technology is the backbone of the entire organization, architectures designing information and management of supply chain in the e-business are part of the team making up operations management. The employment of ICT systems such as GIS, GPS, Transport Management Systems, and Warehousing Management Systems has influenced the supply chain and operation management. The aspects of logistics and operation management that has been influences by these changes include transportation, warehousing, as well as packaging (Blecker, Kersten, Kersten, Flà ¤mig 2008). Conversably, the ultimate objective of logistics management in an organization is to move products and services from the supplier to the marketplace where the consumer is available; the path used to reach the consumer is known as the supply chain. In the supply chain process goods must be on the move so as to satisfy the consumer, this is achieved by delivering goods at the right time, in the right place. Logistics and operation management team endure that all aspects and components of logistic management are attained. As an organization, in order to attain organizational objectives and enjoy absolute advantage in the market, it is crucial to adhere to the logistics and operation management mission. This mission is to always produce services or goods that are of the right quantity and quality, and ensure that its distribution is made at the precise place and time. Logistics and operation management in a business environment entails implementation, management of systems, and design, which focuses on efficient deployment of raw materials, point consumption, physical facilities, in-process inventory, personnel deployment, as well as finished goods information. Therefore, logistics and operation management requires the three components that are transport, warehousing, and packaging. This is so because it covers entire supply chain from raw material acquisition, production process, to consumption. Perhaps, the employment of ICT systems in this process has made it easy to communicate and coordinate efficiently by using communication, transport, and warehousing systems (Blecker, Kersten, Kersten, Flà ¤mig 2008). Technology has improved the entire process of logistics and operation management. Fundamentally, supply chain depends with three main components that are warehousing, packaging and transport. In logistics and operation management warehousing and transportation is the main contributor in a successful supply chain in the world. In fact, the essentiality of warehousing comes when it is strategically placed in a consign that is pertinent to the cargo transport systems. This does not only ease the transportation but also reduces the cost incurred by the organization. Advancement in transport, packaging and warehouse systems has made it easy to satisfy the consumer. In fact, the issues of inaccessible consumers have been eliminated by advancement of technology (Croucher, Rushton, Baker 2010). Packaging is also of considerable importance in logistics and operation management. The consumer is always rational in making decisions, whereby he/she bases its decision on quality, quantity, and price. Hence, the success of an organization depends on the packaging process. Prod uct and services need to be delivered in the right quantities and qualities, especially by adhering to the needs of the consumer. Generally, the employment of ICT systems in the aspects of Logistics and operation management has many effects on warehousing, transport, and packaging process. Apart from bringing a lot of positive changes in the organization, ICT system is not free of challenges. Transport process in logistics and operation management is decidedly crucial. The transport operations play a tremendous role in determining that products are moved efficiently from to the consumers. The progress in management and techniques principles help in improving delivery speed, moving load, operation costs, energy saving, service quality, as well as usage of facilities. In the manipulation of logistics in organization transport systems, play a crucial part. Organizations need to review conditions in order to develop a proper transport and clear logistics framework, especially in implementing techniques and systems that link transportation to production procedures (Voortman 2004). Logistics in an organization optimizes the distribution and production process through the introduction of ICT systems and management techniques, which promotes competitiveness and efficiency. In logistics and operation management, transport is a link between organizations activities that separate. Undeniably, transportation in an organization has substantial influence in the entire logistics system. The maximization of organizational benefits comes as a result of proper coordination in the transport systems; that is from production, manufacturing, as well as delivery. An advanced and well equipped transport system will always yield positive logistics in an organization. Perhaps, a well developed transport system in operation logistics has the potential of providing efficient logistics, promote service efficiency, and reduce cost of operation. In dealing with transport systems, both private and public sectors need to come together. Transport system in any business logistics has economic implication. For example, when it comes to expenses incurs in logistics, most of it goes to transportation system. Hence, organization comprehends on how to minimize transport costs and maximize benefits (Blecker, Kersten, Kersten, Flà ¤mig 2008). The introduction of online transportation has brought a lot of changes in the outcome of logistics. Transport is the affects logistics outcome because it influences forward and backward process, which includes production and sales. Online transport system, which has been made possible by ICT, is a tremendous development in the logistics and operation management. In fact, it has led to simplification of manual order processes and cuts the operation costs, as a result, producing positive logistic outcome (USAID 2010). As a matter of fact, online transportation systems have ensured that the consumer is satisfied, by ensuring that the consumer receives products of the right quality and quantity, at the right place, and time. The ICT has ensured that products transported have the exact code that meets the needs of the consumer. Perhaps, online transport system act as a virtual link in the path of products movement. It is a link between the produces and the consumers; therefore, the consum er will always have confidence on the products been transported. In fact, the consumer can trace and track the products on transit using online technology. On the other hand, the suppliers have a chance to follow up the entire path of supply chain (Srinivas Screenivas 2007). Integration of e-business and logistics is the new trend in the global arena. Firms and customers make business efficient through the use of the internet, as well as e-commerce. Despite the ICT systems in transportation, physical delivery is also crucial because it accomplishes the transportation process in the logistics. The cost of transport logistics and operation management can be higher, built still remains the most needed system in the supply chain. Online transportation has converted activities into automated, reducing costs, increasing product specialization, increasing efficiency, as well as increasing organizational differentiations of products (Srinivas Screenivas 2007). With online transport systems, organizations customers are able to check the product online, compare with similar products and make the best choice. Other organizational logistics depend on transportation; hence it is an integral part on the supply chain activities. The ICT system in transportation has en sured that transportation flows freely from consumers to manufacture and from manufactures to consumers. Logistics and operation management depends on transportation has a link; hence, online and physical transportation systems should be put in a position to make certain the proper flow of information and goods. Generally, the introduction of transport systems has led to cost reduction, significant linkage and consumer satisfaction. Organizations and managers should always be at par with the upcoming ICT technologies, and swiftly incorporate them into the system. Logistics and transport systems are interdependent, whereby logistic management requires transportation to undertake its function, since it will help in developing transportation and reduces environmental traffic. ICT has come up with transportation software systems, which has provided various solutions. These features include booking systems, customization of general features, dispatch, automated systems, as well as fleet management (FPLM 2000). Warehousing is another vital component of logistics and operations management. The 21st century, improved information and warehousing technology have changed the systems. The improvements and changes that have taken place have given warehousing systems a chance to work smarter. Moreover, warehousing system in the technology era allows extremely and customized demands made by the customers be made. The monograph systems are a powerful aspect that provides insights on labor, transport, and warehousing technologies and its impact on the organizations supply chain. The warehouse systems has improved the synthesis of information and synchronized it towards customers’ satisfaction and cost minimization. Today, organizations work towards the provision of superior products and maximization of efficiency. The ability to manage warehouse systems efficiently ensures that sales is carried out smoothly at a reduced cost. As a matter of fact, order fulfillment and receiving inventory in tim e has been facilitated by automated ICT systems (USAID 2010). This ensures that inventory control and warehouse activities are at the peak across the organization. Warehouse Management Systems is a feature that is powerful and full of solutions, especially by automating manufacturers, retailers, customers, and distributors’ logistics. In most scenarios, warehouse management systems do not add value to the products, but it focuses on the sensitivity of time. In fact it applies to those goods that are perishable and of immense sensitivity in the transportation process. The supply chain values the importance of warehouse systems. This is because it consolidates products to be transported and cuts the cost of transportation. Warehouse Management Systems provides an avenue for order management, stockings, picking, replenishment, and receiving. The integration of ICT systems such as bar cording and radio-frequency technology boosts the functions of the warehouse. In the past inventory management was not efficient and accurate, but with the introduction of Warehouse management solutions, inventory handling became accurate and efficient. The implementation off ICT systems in an organization makes sure that the management logistics is achieved; this is because it ensures that the product needed by the customer is at the right place in the appropriate condition. The success of every warehouse depends on the usefulness of ICT systems and how adaptive the organization is to the changes (Rezapour, Farahan, Kardar 2011) The ICT systems implementation through Warehouse Management Systems takes complete control of activities. The use of Radio-Frequency terminals, gives the personnel in an organization an explicit direction for allocating every order such as location, quantity, and product specification. Technology also automatically ensures that shipping labels are produced on demand, as well as indicating the correct order boxes (USAID 2010). Regardless of the picking format, ICT systems in warehouse ensure that cost effectiveness and process efficiency is managed well. It eliminates time wastage that is always incurred in looking for missing products that had been ordered by the consumer. A modern ICT system in the warehouse plays tremendous roles such as increasing accuracy, eliminating errors, pack and pick concurrently, filling of multiple orders, real time inventory tracking, and increases customers satisfaction. Technology and installation of ICT systems in Warehouse ensure real-time visibility. For example, the use of web dispatch screen provides a platform where orders are managed, monitors, and distributed. In fact, it provides a complete view of the warehouse, which goes beyond the warehouse walls. Hence, reports on the inventory level, security, movement and location is generated and shared in real-time. Moreover, real-time Radio Frequency communication is beneficial in ensuring that information is available, manages labor pacing, as well as material tracking. The use of Warehouse Management Systems receipt has improvement the warehousing movement and management. In fact, it leads to errorfree order fulfillment based on automated inventory process. All these aspects of ICT systems in warehouse endures optimal balances of inventory, cost reduction, customers satisfaction, proper monitoring, real-time information, and profit maximization. Warehouse Management Systems, manages warehouse in frastructure, communication and tracking systems between one product stations to another (Button, Brewer, Hensher 2001). Warehouse Management systems and adoption of ICT have played a tremendous role in this era, but it has faced numerous challenges. Technology is one of the factors that affect the ICT systems in the globe, due to its swift changes; it becomes difficult for organizations to adopt the technologies as it arises. Some of the ICT system in the warehouse focuses on the quantity of products in the warehouse and foregoes the efficiency and the entire management logistics of a warehouse. Warehouse is one of the important components of logistics and operational management, whereby if it is not functioning well, other components will be affected. For example, the locator system in a warehouse does not optimize labor even if it realizes some time lag in the process. In addition, organizations have failed in most cases in identifying the recommended system it needs; hence, it makes it difficult to operate well. Basically, warehouse system and adapting of ICT system has played an immense role in t he supply chain process. Another important component in logistics and operational management are packaging. Customers are influence by packaging of products; hence, organization must focus on packaging products according to customers’ demands. In the supply chain logistics, packaging of products into appropriate quantities has effects on efficiency and effectiveness. ICT system in the packaging products improves the storage and transportation of products. In most cases, packaging designers overlook distribution, storage, and handling of products in the operational process, yet, these processes are interconnected. A specification in packaging has a direct influence on delivery and produced lead time. For proper functioning of supply chain packaging process need to be properly stated and adhered to within the management logistics (Voortman 2004). Just like warehousing and transportation, packaging has incorporated the ICT systems. Packaging entails coordinated systems dealing with efficient, safe, secure, and effective condition during storage, distribution, transportation, consumption, recovery, as well as retailing. Its fundamental functions include preserving, protecting and containing products to fit marketing, environmental and logistics aspects. The packaging systems serve logistical functions, which include facilitation of distribution, provision of information product location and condition, and protecting the product. Another function related to packaging is marketing; in this case, it provides required and proper design according to customers’ needs (Saghir 2004). The most utilize systems within packaging logistics include EPS (Electronic Packaging System). The ICT system ensures that there is a systematic and procedural packaging procedure that maximizes efficiency and minimizes cost. In moist case, packaging attracts customers and tells more on the physical branding of the product. Hence, the system works in ensuring that the product and organizations brand name penetrates the market place (Voortman 2004). In a global arena, EPS becomes part of the supply chain, in that it endures that the products ordered by the customer are delivered within the time stated in the right condition. Perhaps, product differentiation and branding come as a result of the packaging system. The issue of branding and differentiation of product gives an organization a unique identification, and competitive advantage over its competitors. The complexity of packaging depends fully on the management logistics, but it still remains an important component in the logisti cs and operational management. Organizations need to establish well logistics management, for the ICT systems to operate well. Conclusively, it is evident that the ICT technologies and systems are very important in an organization. The components of logistics and operational management, such as warehouse, packaging and transportations are critical in the logistical functioning of the organization. In the ICT systems era, organizations need to act swiftly to ensure that they achieve competitive advantage in the marketplace. The supply chain effectiveness and efficiency has been made fast due to adoption of ICT systems such as GIS, GPS, Warehouse Management Systems and Transport Management Systems. Generally, warehouse, transport and packaging logistics need to be implemented to guarantee consumer satisfaction and profitability in an organization. Comparison Of Flight And The Masquerade Of The Red Death

In the story â€Å"Flight† by John Steinbeck and â€Å"The Masquerade Of The Red Death† by Edgar Allen Poe, both protagonists meet a similar fate. In â€Å"Flight†, the main character named Pepe, of mexican descent, is described as a lazy kid at the age of 19. His mother sends him to Monterey to get medicine and bath salts. In town, pepe gets insulted by a white man, and kills him with his fathers knife. His vision of being a man was taking someones life. He is hunted down by men seeking revenge for the man who he kills. In â€Å"The Masquerade Of The Red Death†, A self absorbed and obnoxious prince invites people to his impenetrable castle to avoid the plague. He and his guests are soon tracked down by the disease itself. Both Protagonists are hunted down†¦show more content†¦Throughout Pepes journey to Monterey and to the mountains to seek shelter, Steinbeck changes the environment along with Pepes physical traits. At the beginning of the story, Pepes mouth is described as sweet and shaped like a girls mouth. Pepe draws many resemblances of being a child in the beginning, whereas at his death scene, his mouth is dirty and bloody; â€Å"Between his lips the tip of his black tongue showed† (129). Steinbeck also uses the color black to foreshadow Pepes upcoming death. Steinbecks use of imagery in the story shows how the environment is changing as well as Pepe himself to his inevitable death. Steinbeck masterfully creates a constantly moving environment as well as flowing characters to relate to the common theme of confronting death. In the story â€Å"The Masquerade Of The Red Death†, Edgar Allen Poe describes how gruesome the red death is. For example, There were sharp pains, and sudden dizziness, and then profuse bleeding at the pores, with dissolution. The scarlet stains upon the body and especially upon the face of the victim, were the pest ban which shut him out from the sympathy of his fellow men. (145). Poe describes how disgusting the disease is, and establishes the mood and setting throughout the story. This points to why the guests react to the blood stained intruder. Color is also used as symbolism in the story, representing the seven stages of life. Medical Marijuana Essays (1342 words) - Herbalism, Medicinal Plants

Medical Marijuana One of the most controversial issues in the United States is over medical marijuana. Many experiments test the validity of the drug as a medicine, and results of these experiments receive much praise but also some critique. The DEA and the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) are battling over the issue. The underlying matter that cannot be ignored is that marijuana proves to be a useful medication for many patients, especially those with wasting diseases such as AIDS and cancer. In 1996 California passed Proposition 215, which allowed the use of medical marijuana (4444). Since then, six other states have made medical marijuana legal; Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, Maine, Oregon, and Washington. Santa Cruz in California has gone even further, allowing the medical use of marijuana with a doctors note certifying that the patient has a condition for which marijuana is considered helpful, including AIDS, cancer, multiple sclerosis, glaucoma, anorexia, chronic pain, arthritis, and spastic diseases (22222). Santa Cruz law allows growing marijuana so it may be sold for the cost of production. This way, medical users do not have to resort to buying at street prices. The government made it a requirement that all medical studies on marijuana be paid for by scarce grant money from the National Institute of Health (NIH). In recent years, scientists have tried to persuade the NIH to grant them money for medical studies on marijuana, only to be turned down. Only three studies have been approved by the NIH. On May 22, 1999 the Clinton Administration loosened that restriction, allowing researchers to buy Government-grown marijuana for their research, as long as they can fund themselves. Chuck Blanchard, who is the chief counsel for McCaffrey (director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy) says, Before, the problem was if you wanted marijuana, you had to not only show that it was high-quality research, you had to show that it was more important than other competing applications for NIH funding. Now, as long as you are willing to show that it is high-quality research and also provide your own funding, you can have access to medical marijuana (666 66). The decision of the Clinton Administration came two months after a government-sponsored study concluded that the active ingredients in marijuana, called cannabinoids, appeared useful for treating pain, nausea, and severe weight loss in AIDS patients (666666). No evidence of marijuana being a gateway drug was found. The study also came up with some surprising results. It found that treating glaucoma through marijuana was not as useful as we thought. The drug does reduce eye pressure, but the effects are short-lived. The same study found that marijuana was effective in relieving muscle spasms due to multiple sclerosis (888888). At the 13th International AIDS Conference on July 13, 2000, Dr. Donald Abrams of the University of California released the results of the $1 million study of marijuana on AIDS patients. Abrams concern was to determine whether the chemical components of marijuana in any way interfered with the bodys ability to break down components of protease inhibitors. Protease inhibitors are relatively new antiviral drugs that help HIV patients retain a healthy immune system. Abram found that there was no interference between marijuana and the protease inhibitors in any of the 62 patients. Also, Abrams experiment found that marijuana increased the appetite of the HIV patients. The patients who smoked marijuana (three times a day for 21 days) gained an average of 7.7 pounds, while patients who took Marinol (pill containing active ingredients of marijuana including THC) gained an average of 7 pounds. After the experiment, Dr. Abrams said, Its exciting. Its historic. It confirms that all the states t hat have allowed patients to use medical marijuana have not made a serious mistake. SABIN Other studies have found that marijuana indeed has medicinal value, as well as some risk. The US National Institutes of Health and an affiliate of the National Academy of Sciences have concluded that the active ingredients in marijuana can ease the pain, nausea, and vomiting of cancer and AIDS. It also is prescribed for certain glaucoma patients (555555). The NIH, the Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research, and San Mateo County will all be sponsoring future

Linguistic Typology

Linguistic Typology Linguistic Typology is the analysis, comparison, and classification of languages according to their common structural features and forms. This is also called cross-linguistic typology.   The branch of linguistics that studies the structural similarities between languages, regardless of their history, as part of an attempt to establish a satisfactory classification, or typology, of languages is known as typological linguistics (Dictionary of Linguistics and Phonetics, 2008). Examples   Typology is the study of linguistic systems and recurring patterns of linguistic systems. Universals are typological generalizations based on these recurring patterns.Linguistic typology took off in its modern form with the ground-breaking research of Joseph Greenberg, such as, for example, his seminal paper on a cross-linguistic survey of word order leading to a series of implicational universals (Greenberg 1963). . . . Greenberg also attempted to establish methods for quantifying typological studies, in order that linguistic typology could meet scientific standards (cf. Greenberg 1960 [1954]). Furthermore, Greenberg re-introduced the importance of studying the ways languages change, but with the emphasis that language changes give us possible explanations for language universals (cf., for example, Greenberg 1978).Since Greenbergs pioneering efforts linguistic typology has grown exponentially and is, as any science, continuously being enhanced and redefined as to methods and approac hes. The last few decades have seen the compilation of large-scale databases with the help of ever more refined technology, which have led to new insights as well as given rise to new methodological issues.(Viveka Velupillai, An Introduction to Linguistic Typology. John Benjamins, 2013) Tasks of Linguistic Typology Among the tasks of general linguistic typology we include . . . a) the classification of languages, i.e., the construction of a system to order natural languages on the basis of their overall similarity; b) the discovery of the mechanism of construction of languages, i.e., the construction of a system of relationships, a network by means of which not only the obvious, categorial mechanisms of language can be read but also the latent ones.(G. Altmann and W. Lehfeldt, Allgemeinge Sprachtypologie: Prinzipien und Messverfahren, 1973; quoted by Paolo Ramat in Linguistic Typology. Walter de Gruyter, 1987) Fruitful Typological Classifications: Word Order In principle, we might pick on any structural feature and use it as the basis of classification. For example, we could divide languages into those in which the word for a canine animal is [dog] and those in which it isnt. (The first group here would contain exactly two known languages: English and the Australian language Mbabaram.) But such a classification would be pointless since it wouldnt lead anywhere. The only typological classifications which are of interest are those which are fruitful. By this, we mean that the languages in each category should turn out to have other features in common, features which are not used to set up the classification in the first place.[The most celebrated and fruitful of all typological classifications has proved to be one in terms of basic word order. Proposed by Joseph Greenberg in 1963 and more recently developed by John Hawkins and others, word-order typology has revealed a number of striking and previously unsuspected correlations. For example, a language with SOV [Subject, Object, Verb] order is highly likely to have modifiers that precede their head nouns, auxiliaries that follow their main verbs, postpositions instead of prepositions, and a rich case system for nouns. A VSO [Verb, Subject, Object] language, in contrast, usually has modifiers that follow their nouns, auxiliaries that precede their verbs, prepositions, and no cases.(R.L. Trask, Language, and Linguistics: The Key Concepts, 2nd ed., edited by Peter Stockwell. Routledge, 2007) Typology and Universals [T]ypology and universals research are intimately related: if we have a set of significant parameters whose values none the less show a high degree of correlation, then the network of relations among these parameter values can equally be expressed in the form of a network of implicational universals (absolute or tendencies).Clearly, the more widespread the net of logically independent parameters that can be linked in this way, the more significant is the typological base being used.(Bernard Comrie, Language Universals, and Linguistic Typology: Syntax and Morphology, 2nd ed. The University of Chicago Press, 1989) Typology and Dialectology There is evidence from linguistic varieties around the world, including Greek dialects, to suggest that the distribution of structural characteristics over the worlds languages may not be entirely random from a sociolinguistic point of view. For example, we have seen indications that long-term contact involving child bi-lingualism may lead to increased complexity, including redundancy. Conversely, contact involving adult second language acquisition may lead to increased simplification. Furthermore, communities with dense, tightly-knit social networks may be more likely to demonstrate fast-speech phenomena and the consequences of this, and more likely to experience unusual sound changes. I would like to suggest, moreover, that insights of this type can complement research in linguistic typology by giving an explanatory edge to the findings of this discipline. And I would also suggest that these insights should give some sense of urgency to typological research: if it is true that cert ain types of linguistic structure are to be found more frequently, or possibly only, in dialects spoken in smaller and more isolated communities, then we had better research these types of communities as rapidly as we can while they still exist. The Role of Religion in the Chinese and Indian Societies Research Paper

The Role of Religion in the Chinese and Indian Societies - Research Paper Example The people within a society collectively act and share the same interests (Carroll & Buchholtz, 2009). With this brief definition on hand, it can be inferred that societies differ from each other. In line with this, this paper will identify the differences and similarities of the Indian society from the Chinese society in terms of their religious beliefs, and on how these differences affect their standard of living and their employment. Indian and Chinese Society Geographically speaking, the geographic unity of the Indian society is bounded by the strong cultural roots of the Indians. The variety of culture and traditions of the different groups in the Indian society has become one of the strong bonds of the people, which are greatly depicted in their literature. The Indian society had transitioned from Sanskrit to a Secular society; however, this did not alter its unity. An Indian household has a natural familial relationship between parents and children. Endogamy is also practiced within the family in order to maintain bloodlines within royal families. With this on hand, hypergamy also exists in the Indian society, such as in the case of the caste Indian system. Â  Aside from hypergamy, the Indian households also practice disintegration, which allows the family to be independent from one another. Aside from this, two bases of feudalism are also presented in India including the fiefs and the benefices. On the other hand, the basic characteristic of a Chinese society is also feudal. Moreover, it has buried the social system; however, the Chinese society still maintained some of the characteristics of a social system in order to influence and regularize the behavior of the Chinese. In summary, the typical Chinese can be considered as a dual, closed, integrated, and stable society (Sharma, 2004; Peilin, 2012). The Effects of Religion in the Indian and Chinese Society In relation to religious beliefs, the Indian society also tolerates different religious sects du e to the wide array of different groups in India. The Indian society in terms of religion is considered as one of the Asian societies that allows a free competition among religious sects. Also, the Hindu religion believes in the model of promise in two forms. The first is the incarnation that can be improved by following the specific norms, and the second is the struggle for life that can only be ended through rebirth. Lastly, the Hindu religion believes in contemplation and salvation. In this manner, salvation can be achieved through the grace and forgiveness of the saviors who are alive. They believe of the soteriology or the act of salvation from the outside, which can be achieved through the forgiveness of faith (Marx Weber, as cited in Madan, 1979). In relation to the standard of living and employment, the Indian society practices the caste system, which is one of the core characteristics of the Hindu region. One of the bases of employment in the Indian society is a religion th at creates a line between the oppressed, the Dalits or the untouchables, and the rich. With the differences and the heterogeneous of the employees in India, there is a difficulty in organizing unions and parties for the variety of employees. Also, their jobs are often affected due to the fatalistic beliefs in destiny and other superstitious beliefs enveloping their religion (Prakashan, 2008). Similar to the Indian society, the Chinese society allows the freedom to choose one's religious preference. On the other hand, in Chinese society, religious beliefs do not prohibit or affect their employment as stated and implemented in their law. There are governmental sanctions and punishments that can be given to employers who use religion as a basis when hiring or

A Beautiful Mind Essay Example for Free

A Beautiful Mind Essay Mental disorders have been one of the most severe cases of abnormality in our society today. Filmmakers are fascinated to create movies based on these disorders. Many filmmakers tried to portray the effects of different kinds of mental illness. They are fascinated with how the human mind works whenever it is consumed with abnormalities. Some films are made to stun the audience using the gruesome effects and treatment of the illness; but in reality those stunning effects were added just to impress or capture the interest and sympathy of the general public, and sometimes it goes on to the point of exaggeration. But some are made accurately, explaining detail-by-detail symptoms, effects and treatment of the disorder. For my movie review, I tried to look for a good example, a model movie, and a work of art that really wants to share all information they could possibly share, and possibly doesn’t stray out of its purpose. To that effect, the movie â€Å"A Beautiful Mind† is the film that had captured my interest the most. This particular film portrays a man named John Forbes Nash (played by actor Russel Crowe) who was found to have a psychological disorder called Schizophrenia. See more:  Perseverance essay A Beautiful Mind† is very effective in portraying the symptoms, effects and treatment of Shezophrenia. A Beautiful Mind (Schizophrenia) The movie’s portrayal of schizophrenia was mostly accurate. Nash would be described as a paranoid schizophrenic, having delusions and hallucinations with themes of persecution and grandiosity. His personality fits the description of someone with schizophrenia because he lives in his own inner world and he is socially withdrawn and isolated. The disease developed over time from a chronic history of social inadequacy. As shown in the movie, Nash had a difficult time relating to his peers and talking to women. It also developed at the standard age, late adolescence during his years at college. Another realistic feature of the film was that once the disease developed, the hallucinations were triggered by stress. Nash experienced disturbed perceptions in the form of three of his senses. He heard voices; saw people that didn’t exist and was even able to believe he was touching these people. At times schizophrenics inflict pain on themselves in response to voices or imagined reality. In Nash’s case, he tore open his arm to find a sensor he had imagined that the government put in his body. The last thing that made the portrayal realistic was that research shows that given a supportive environment, some schizophrenics eventually recover to enjoy a normal life, and in the end that’s what happened with Nash. He was able to live his life with occasional bouts of schizophrenia intermittently. According to Philip Long, Schizophrenia is a chronic, severe, and disabling mental illness (2008). Schizophrenia is a disorder that lasts for at least 6 months and includes at least 1 month of active-phase symptoms of the following: delusion, hallucination, disorganized or catatonic behavior, negative symptoms. In the movie A Beautiful Mind, the main character John Forbes Nash exhibited all of the above symptoms. He often engaged in conversations with his imagined friend and roommate, Charles Herman. He was also convinced that there was an agent named William Archer who was giving him secret assignments to be delivered at night. But it was not long when his wife, Alicia, realizes what was happening to her husband’s state of mind, and passionately helped him realize that Charles Herman, William Archer and Marcy, were all a product of his unstable mind. Furthermore, people with Schizophrenia find it hard to be sociable, and even their jobs may suffer because of this (Long 2008). In the movie, John Nash illustrated that he was no longer capable of functioning at work because he was continuously engaging in the imagined government assignments instead of attending class on a regular basis. He was also unable to function socially, he socially withdrew himself from his friends and he was no longer capable to care for his baby especially the scene in which he was out of touch with reality that he left the baby unattended in the tub. John Nash was also experiencing problems with his wife as a result of his inability to engage in sexual activities and his wife’s inability to clearly comprehend the gruesome effects of Schizophrenia. People with Schizophrenia vary with their reaction towards their own illness because of the simple fact that what they see and feel is beyond their control. It is inevitable for them to consistently rumble incoherent sentences or just respond with a very uncontrollable anger, sometimes with no apparent reason at all. John Nash exhibited this symptom especially when he was in the presence of others who were not aware of his mental disorder. People with this disorder may not be able to hold down jobs or even perform tasks as simple as maintaining conversation as John Nash exhibited in the movie A Beautiful Mind. Additionally, John Nash was given Insulin Shock Therapy, which is also known as Insulin Coma Therapy at the psychiatric hospital that he was admitted to. He received this form of treatment five times a week for ten weeks. Large doses of insulin were administered which would reduce the blood sugar and brought on a seizure-like state and then a comatose state that John Nash experienced whenever this form of treatment was done. The Insulin Shock Therapy is still done however there are critics who state that this form of treatment is cruel and inhumane but there has not been a termination of this treatment in spite of the criticisms. Furthermore, over the years more treatments have been formed in order to treat Schizophrenia. Antipsychotic drugs are thought to mainly provide relief from the positive symptoms and psychosis. Nash received antipsychotic drugs when he was released from the hospital. Some examples of the psychotic drugs that are being used now to treat Schizophrenia are Thorazine, Clozaril, and Trilafon. Unfortunately his medication disrupted his relationship with his wife almost as much as his delusions did in the first place. For example, he couldn’t respond to his wife in bed, he couldn’t show affection to their child, and he couldn’t do simple tasks around the house. He stopped taking his medication and falls back into his paranoid delusions. Nash had a breakthrough and realized that the people he was seeing were hallucinations when he realized that none of them aged. In the movie A Beautiful Mind, John Nash had the support of his wife, Alicia Nash who was very instrumental in his recovery. The support of loved ones is very vital for people with Schizophrenia in order for them to not face the challenges that they will encounter alone. This is a very unusual story since the protagonist was able to win over his disease; not all who were under Schizophrenia are able to this kind of accomplishment. Displays of acts of violence are of major issue in treating Schizophrenia (Long 2008). Nash’s reaction when he thought that Archer was threatening his family is an indication to this act. However, except from his previous flights, John Nash did not commit any serious violent acts. He unintentionally harmed himself by removing the imagined device that he stated that William Archer implanted in his hand. This is a contradiction to the usual. But we all know from the beginning that Nash is an exception to the rule. Observations over the past years suggest that Schizophrenia is most unfavorable with men than women. Maybe this has something to do with the emotional treatment suffered by men over various circumstances, and that includes the amount of rejection they received from their environment. John Nash received mainly mixed reactions as a result of his mental disorder. His wife, Alicia was devastated at first but was able to overcome all of her negative emotions when she recalled the loving man she married and knew before he was diagnosed with Schizophrenia. However, he was laughed at and mocked by some of the students who attended the university that he worked at. One unrealistic aspect of the film was that Nash was able to just ignore the hallucinations when he stopped taking his medication. In reality, the delusions would have been too intense to just take no notice of. The movie also oversimplified affects of the disease on his family. They never attended any counseling or help groups, and the disease was never explained to the wife in great detail, yet she stuck by his side. However there weren’t any parts in the film that would misinform an audience about the disorder. In conclusion, the movie A Beautiful Mind is an excellent movie that clearly depicts the life of a person with Schizophrenia. It demonstrates the challenges that individuals with Schizophrenia encounter and it also demonstrates that the support of the family is very vital for individuals with Schizophrenia in order for them to cope with the effects of this mental disorder. The movie A Beautiful Mind showed realistic dramas that John Forbes Nash encountered and problems that other individuals who have been diagnosed with Schizophrenia and other mental disorders will most likely experience.

Racism Today :: Racism Argumentative Race Essays

Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Racism is one of the world’s major issues today. Many people are not aware of how much racism still exists in our schools workforces, and anywhere else where social lives are occurring. It is obvious that racism is bad as it was many decades ago but it sure has not gone away. Racism very much exists and it is about time that people need to start thinking about the instigations and solutions to this matter. Many people believe that it depends on if a person was brought into the world as a racist or not but that is not the case at all. In fact, an individual cannot be born a racist but only learn to become one as they grow from child to adulthood. Basic causes, mainstream, institutions, government, anti racism groups, and even some hidden events in Canada’s past are a few of the possible instigations and solutions to racism.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  To begin with, frustration is a very common cause of racism. If one is having some sort of a social problem, they tend to get very angry with people who are not even concerned with their situation. For instance, when a person is having a tough time economically, they find it easy to blame immigrants for taking away their jobs or creating fewer opportunities (Abanes 1992,12-15). This type of an analysis is very easy to make but when one makes this assumption, it usually leads to hate towards any minority group. The psychological factor is also common disturbance that is found as the root of racism. People with tough childhood may sometimes produce anger and hate towards others (Hayes 1995, 4-5). This kind of person is inclined to dominate others as these qualities attract to racism because of the way racism divides the world into superior and inferior. In these types of situations, one can only picture of what might go through the heads of such individuals. However , in some cases aggravation is only created by the mental thought. Change is a particular device that people cannot handle at all times. People are more comfortable around the recognizable and they find it hard to adapt to a culture that they are not familiar being with. Since 1987, Chinese have been settling in Vancouver, as the suburb of Richmond went from one in twenty to one in three of its residents being Chinese, in two decades. This rapid change was not acceptable for many people who moved out for that very reason so they can live in a â€Å"white town† again (Rupet 1996,13-15).

3 Fators of Doom for Macbeth Essay

In Macbeth there were a few factors that contributed to the degeneration of the Macbeth character. There were three factors that destroyed Macbeth. The main force that was predominately responsible for the downfall of Macbeth was his single flaw. Which was his own ambition. Even though his ambition brought him to his height of power, it was also what led him to his downfall. During the play Macbeth’s ambition brought him to achieve his goals but as the play evolves, it forced him to face his fate. Macbeth had become so obsessed with becoming King, and remaining powerful, that he became a completely different man. See more: Satirical elements in the adventure of Huckleberry Finn essay His ambition led him to become greedy, violent, power hunger, and a murder. An example of his new character occurred when he killed King Duncan. After the first murder, killing seemed to be the only solution to keep his reign over the people of Scotland. It was because of these killings and his overbearing ambition that caused him to be overthrown and kill himself. Another force was the prophecies which were told by the witches. If it had not been for the witches telling Macbeth that he was going to be Thane of Cawdor, Thane of Glanis, and King of Scotland, he would still be is ordinary self. After the witches shared these prophecies with Macbeth he started thinking of ways he could become king. The other influential factor that destroyed Macbeth was his wife Lady Macbeth. In the play Lady Macbeth was going to kill King Duncan, but she just could not do it. Although she then provided a scheme which caused Macbeth to kill King Duncan. After the first murder, Macbeth seemed to come to the solution that killing was the way. Therefore Lady Macbeth was the one who introduced the concept of murder to Macbeth, which was another reason why Macbeth was destroyed.

Negative peace is defined as the absence of large-scale physical violence - the absence of the condition of war. Positive peace involves the development of a society in which, except for the absence of direct violence, there is no structural violence or social injustice. Accordingly, peace education could be defined as an interdisciplinary area of education whose goal is institutionalized and non-institutionalized teaching about peace and for peace. Peace education aims to help students acquire skills for non-violent conflict resolution and to reinforce these skills for active and responsible action in the society for the promotion of the values of peace. Therefore, unlike the concept of conflict resolution, which can be considered to be retroactive - trying to solve a conflict after it has already occurred - peace education has a more proactive approach. Its aim is to prevent a conflict in advance or rather to educate individuals and a society for a peaceful existence on the basis of non-violence, tolerance, equality, respect for differences, and social justice. âž ¢ PHILOSOPHY OF PEACE EDUCATION âÅ"“ Definition of the Philosophy of Peace Education: The philosophy of peace education can be defined, most simply, as the elaboration of reasons why we ought to be committed to peace education.
